Breaking: Authorities find possible human remains in Londonderry

According to the Vinton County Sheriff’s Office, human remains may have been found off Old State Route 50 in Londonderry, where a search was being conducted for a missing 53-year-old Ashville man.

The sheriff’s office report states that a Mossberg shotgun was discoverd partially submerged in water and debris in a creek next to a campsite where officials were searching for Stephen Dempsey, 53, of Ashville.

Dempsey has been missing since sometime between Jan. 8-9, when he was reportedly hunting on property belonging to his family on Route 50 in Londonderry.

Upon further investigation, other items were found that led the officials from the sheriff’s office to call the Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigations to the scene.

During the investigation, what was believed to be human remains were found in the same area. Vinton County Coroner Dr. Rebecca Huston was notified and went to the scene.

The remains are being sent to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for confirmation on whether they are human remains or not.
