Seniors recognized before boys’ victory over Zane Trace
McARTHUR — Vinton County High School recognized its senior athletes Monday night before the varsity boys basketball team went on to beat Zane Trace High School 62-51.
The seniors recognized were boys basketball players Ryan Chesser, Dustin Holsinger and Tyler Dunlap; girls basketball players Keshia Griffith and Kelsey Griffith; cheerleader Jenny Ross; and wrestler Tanner Sowers. Other seniors from the wrestling team were not able to make the ceremony because of their preparations for tournament play. Varsity girls basketball senior Josie Ward also was unable to attend the event.
The Vikings varsity boys finished the season 14-6, sitting alone atop the Tri-Valley Conference. They had claimed a share of the TVC title after a 72-64 win over Nelsonville-York Feb. 14. On Friday, a 53-49 victory over Wellston made them TVC Champions.
The Vikings’ tournament play begins Friday against Fairfield Union. Tipoff is set for 8:30 pm. at Logan High School. If they win, they will advance to play at Ohio University’s Convocation Center.
The Vinton County Varsity Girls also shared a seat atop the TVC this season. A 70-46 victory over Meigs on Feb. 9 earned the girls a share of the title; Athens was the other TVC champion. The girls beat Gallia Academy 53-34 Feb. 13 in the first round of tournament play. They lost a close game to Marietta, 63-61, Saturday at Alexander High School to end their playoff hopes.
