Two Vinton County Athletes compete at University of Akron State Indoor Meet
Two Vinton County Athletes recently traveled to Akron to compete in the University of Akron’s Stile Athletics Field House in the indoor state track meet.
The event is sponsored by the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches.
To qualify for the event, the athletes must have one of the top 25 performances in the state in their event. Vinton County had two qualify for the event — junior Caitlyn Owings and senior Justin Hawk.
Owings earned All-Ohio status by finishing in sixth place in the high jump by leaping 5’0. With her performance, she became Vinton County’s first All-Ohio Indoor Track and Field athlete since the indoor meet began in 2006.
Hawk ran the 60-meter hurdles and finished with a time of 8.72 seconds, giving him the 10th fastest overall time in preliminary heats. He was only three-hundredths of a second away from qualifying for the final heat, in which the top eight runners competed.
The Vinton County Track team will open its outdoor season on March 27 with a home meet against Chillicothe.
