Vinton County High School names top students for Class of 2012
The Vinton County High School Class of 2012 has two valedictorians, five salutatorians and one top vocational student. They are:
Alex Nathan Eberts, son of Gary and Marsha Eberts, is the Class of 2012 co-valedictorian. He has been involved in the arts, being a member of Director’s Choir and participating in the Viking Players’ production of “Suessical: The Musical.” Alex has been named a member of Science Olympiad, Quiz Bowl and president of an anti-bullying group called Vinton County Unity. He has been a four-year member of the French club, which enabled him to travel with the club on its recent excursion to France. Academically, Alex has been recognized for his achievements both by being named valedictorian and by being inducted into the National Honor Society. He will be attending The Ohio State University this fall to pursue a career in the zoological field.
Brian Hivick, son of Robert Michael and Janet Lynne Hivick of McArthur, is the Class of 2012 co-valedictorian. Brian has been involved in a number of activities during high school and has received numerous awards. Brian has been a member of the marching band, concert band, pep band, Science Olympiad, Quiz Bowl, National Honor Society and French club. During this time, he has held numerous leadership positions among these organization, including band president, National Honor Society vice president and French club officer. In addition, many of these groups have won awards during his tenure with them, such as the marching and concert bands and Science Olympiad. Brian also has been recognized academically, being recognized with honors such as the Chamber of Commerce Student of the Month, Principal’s List, the prestigious Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award and featured in the WSAZ “Best of the Class” program. After graduation, Brian plans to attend Ohio University to pursue a major in biochemistry.
Cody Saylor, son of Glenn and Angie Saylor, is the Class of 2012 co-salutatorian. He has been involved in the National Honor Society, jazz band and other activities. He has been a participant in the Spanish club and cross country for four years. Cody and the cross country team won the Tri-Valley Conference and qualified to the regional race, which has not happened since 2001. As a member of the Science Olympiad, Cody and the team qualified to the state level of the competition. He has also shown dedication to his education by maintaining perfect attendance. In the fall, Cody will be attending Ohio University to pursue a degree in graphic design.
Gabby Thurston, daughter of Randy and Rose Thurston of Creola, is the Class of 2012 co-salutatorian. She has been involved in many activities, including volleyball, tennis, French club, yearbook, VCU (Vinton County Unity), student council, Science Olympiad and National Honor Society. While being in high school, she was named a 2011 Regional Scholar and was November Student of the Month. After high school, she plans on attending Ohio University – Chillicothe to pursue a degree in accounting.
Marcie Reedy, daughter of Brian and Terri Reedy of McArthur, is the Class of 2012 co-salutatorian. Over the course of her high school career, Marcie has been a member of the tennis team, Science Olympiad, National Honor Society, student council and French club. She also was named Senior Class vice president and a 2011 Regional Scholar. Marcie has received the Presidential Scholarship from Shawnee State University, the 2011-12 Holzer Clinic Outstanding Science Student award, Student of the Month, and Most Valuable Tennis Player award. In the fall of 2012, she plans to attend Shawnee State University. As of now, she is currently undecided on a major but plans to go into the medical field.
Michea Snavely, daughter of Chuck and Tammy Snavely of Hamden, is the Class of 2012 co-salutatorian. Throughout her high school career, she has been active in the following: tennis, student council, Science Olympiad, Project Backpack, yearbook staff, National Honor Society, French club and Regional Scholars. Her honors include Chamber of Commerce Student of the Month, 2011 Miss Vinton County Queen and Most Valuable Player of the varsity tennis team. She has two brothers, Michael and Nick. After graduation, she will attend the University of Rio Grande to pursue a career in nursing.
Myrriah Mace, daughter of Randy and Rhonda Mace, is the Class of 2012 co-salutatorian. She has been active in Spanish club, Director’s Choir, Project Backpack, Beta Club, FCCLA, volleyball, basketball, yearbook, National Honor Society, Regional Scholars, church drama team, church music team and church youth group. Her honors include Chamber of Commerce Student of the Month, Scholar Athlete of the Year, Honor Roll “All A’s Award” and Paul Pigott Scholarship of 2012. She has one sibling, a brother, Stratton. After graduation, she will attend the University of Rio Grande to pursue a career in nursing.
Kaynatha McWhorter, daughter of Ronald and Betty McWhorter, is the Class of 2012 top vocational student. She is currently taking Early Childhood Education at Buckeye Hills Career Center and is a member of the FCCLA. She works with a preschool group every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning at Rio Grande Elementary. She also volunteers at Forrest Evehart Memorial Golf Course in Chillicothe and for Secret Santa in Jackson. Kaynatha’s father drowned when she was 9, and she has two younger siblings, Cheyenne and Ronny Jo. After graduation, she plans to attend the University of Rio Grande to further her career in education.
