Vinton County makes up part of Race Across America course

June 22, 2012

Hunky Dorys LCRC Renegade Racing, comprised of four men from Ireland, was the 18th team to check in at the Chillicothe time station Thursday, before making its way down Route 50 toward the Athens time station.

Race Across America teams are speeding through Vinton County on their way from the West Coast to the East Coast.

The bicycle competition pits teams from across the world in a 3,000-mile journey from Oceanside, Calif., to Annapolis, Md. The race course crosses 12 states, passes through 88 counties and 350 communities — including Vinton County and McArthur. Almost 100 teams, representing 20 countries, will pass through Vinton County over the course of several days.

Participants can either race individually or on two-, four- or eight-person relay teams. Teams have a maximum of nine days to cross the country. The race started June 12, 13 and 16, and will end between June 24 and 27. Racers must check in at each time station, spaced between 40 and 90 miles apart. Information, including the latest leaderboard, can be found on the race’s website.
